A Merry Christmas to you all! Our home is now filling up with boxes. Not so much yet the ones we’ll bring over but rather the ones with stuff we’ll leave behind. The movers will take care of the rest. It’s quite amazing how much paper we carry along but never actually do anything about… At least 5 kilograms worth of class notes made it to the trash – and this wasn’t the first time I cleaned up. Same thing with Vanessa’s notes. As far as our trip is concerned, we’re now all set with hotel and plane tickets, in addition to temporary housing on arrival. We’re also spending those last few evenings in the area meeting with good friends and family. Most of them will end up bringing home some element of our furniture (plants, lamps and misc. devices…).

Merry Christmas!
December 28, 2000Visa
December 21, 2000I’m just back from the post office with my visa. The package (literally kilograms of paper – 5cm thick!) from my lawyer arrived via FedEx just three days ago. I brought it all to the US embassy the next day where they ended up keeping just a couple letters and forms…. sigh… 48 hours later, it’s all in the mail, and I’m told I need to carry the whole thing in my hand luggage when crossing the border… At least it was easy and fast, and the last thing I’d have needed is having to chase my visa the day we leave. On a different note, we now know where we’re going to live for the first few weeks. This is all actually starting to feel quite real;-)
About to leave
December 18, 2000Funny how the fact of leaving Switzerland makes me realize how much there is to like around here. I knew this was all going to be quite an experience but didn’t expect it to begin just now. Nothing breathtaking really but I’m being hit by memories of ski days with friends, afternoons on the lake, landscapes of mountains and forests and a number of other things. All in all, it’s probably got more to do with a sudden strike of nostalgia than anything else… UPDATED - Actually I’m feeling really motivated at that point. And they say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger;-)
A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace
December 16, 2000The first time I accessed the Internet was around 1995 on a NextStation (remember?) without even a color monitor. The Internet spirit back then is well summed up in John Perry Barlow’s Declaration of the Independance of Cyberspace. Since then, things have massively changed…

Quickies
December 14, 2000I took the day off to attend a presentation of 2C3D by a friend of mine who’s living through a rather exciting experience as an entrepreneur. Since I’m still in the process of getting things ready for our relocation next January, I also wrote a few letters to cancel insurances and other stuff like that. Fun, fun, fun… As far as this website is concerned, there are now boxes on the left when you hit certain pages. These should ultimately provide you with links related to that page’s content – but they essentially make for a more balanced page layout;-)
Next steps
December 12, 2000We had a visit from the household goods mover yesterday. It seems they’ll be able to arrange packing our stuff on January 3rd & 4th, and pick it all up on the 6th. Now if our flight reservations could get off those waiting lists… Seems like everyone’s going to California at that time of the year.
Getting started
December 10, 2000Somebody from the household goods moving company should come by tomorrow to evaluate when the actual move could occur. Once that’s done we’ll finally be able to work against a hard date.
